THOSE MBBS doctors who received their post-graduation Degrees from countries other than the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada can soon heave a sigh of relief.
Until now, only degrees received from the aforementioned five countries were recognized in India.
This means that those who studied in countries like Russia, and Canada, could not use their PG degree in India while applying for jobs.
The Board of Governors of medico education regulator Medical Council (MCI – BOG) of India has now decided to allow PG degree from any country, provided that the holders clear the DNB (Diplomate of national Board) examination.
In India, there are Two ways of earning PG degrees. While the PG Board, Under MCI-BOG, awards MD / MS (Doctor in medicine, Doctor in Science) Degrees, the NBE, Under the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, awards DNBs.
Even MBBS students who get their degrees from institutes abroad have to take the foreign Medical Graduate Examination conducted by the MCI (now MCI – BOG) before the are registered to practice as doctors in the country, Their passing abysmally poor.
“Only 10 – 15 per cent of these graduates are able to clear the MCI licentiate examination every year and even if we allow a similar mode of entry to PG Doctors, we want to ensure that only highly trained doctors get the recognition,” a senior official in MCI – BOG said.
Sources in the Union Health and Family welfare ministry said that government had asked the regulator to introduce reforms for ensuring a higher number of MBBS and specialist doctors.
